Beer Tasting in the Abbott Ale House

Barry Fitzgerald was our host last night for the first beer tasting - and hopefully not the last one. Barry's knowledge of beer, methods of brewing and all gossip involved is second to none. He was very generous and offered 15 beers from around the globe to taste (no worries, it was a tasting and not a drinking session). He was even able to match the beer with food....ever tried German Weizen with banana bread - you might be surprised. We also served smoked cheese, sourdough bread, salami, cheesecake (and I am not joking), mushroom bites. Please see below the list of beers we tasted last night:

Grolsch
Vedett
Kastell Cru (you could 'sell' it as sparkling wine)
Kastell Rose (the same but in rose - and I still not joking)
Blue Moon (my personal favourite)
Hybrid - from the El Bulli team (yes that is THE El Bulli team)
Grolsch Weizen
Weihenstephaner (white beer)
Weihenstephaner (Vitis)
Duvel
Maredsous Triple (10% - yes you are reading correctly - 10%)
Chimay Red
Trappist Achell
Chimay Blue
Liefmans Cherry
Liefmans One in a thousand (because only one in a thousand likes this one)

Opinions were divided at times, especially with the stronger beers and the last two beers.....girlie as I am - I loved the cherry beer while some of the fellow tasters thought it was too sweet.

Terence, the barman was quick to replace the glasses and all went smoothly. We also almost finished on time. Thank you again to Barry and Terence for a great night.

Seeing the selection of Ciders Barry has in the off license - you know what is coming up soon ;-)

Don't forget our upcoming events - next one is 30th December for a Mackerel Feast...more later

  1. Fantastic night, well done to all who organised.
Thanks also to Barry who had an incredible knowledge of beers, their ingredients and flavours.

The Weihenstephaner (Vitis) was my own favourite, but it was great to taste all of them.

An article about the event appeared in todays Irish Examiner(11/9) at the bottom of page 11.
